After finishing Nekrovirus I thought I'd explore its parametric neighbourhood a bit further and eventually that exploration crystallized into this image. At first the chaotic rift running down the bottom was so faint so as to be practically invisible, but eventually as the rendering progressed its outlines became more and more apparent and I knew I had found what I didn't even know I was looking for. When I eventually found a coloration that suitably highlighted what I wished to highlight there was really only one name that I could give to the image. I had read Vernor Vinge's great science fiction novel several years earlier and now its name bubbled up from the recesses of my memory as I was looking at this burning rift of mathematical instability.

Although the resemblance is quite remote this image is somewhat related to the bifurcation diagram.
