Topography

A composite image of a three-dimensional Mandelbrot set where the height is determined by each orbit's minimum distance from origin during iteration. This distance is zero at the center of each of Mandelbrot's many bulbs, but past the boundary of the set the distance is always greater than zero. At the top of each "mountain" in this image is a tiny copy of the Mandelbrot. The bifurcating patterns at the edges of the larger bulbs visualize the period-domain splits.
